“I can’t stop him,” Grizzy said, the minute she opened the door.

“Stop him doing what?”

She gestured toward the living room where Arthur lay on his side, holding up a spirit level to the TV stand. “Yep,” he announced, “yep, yep, yep, it’s definitely crooked. So crooked. You know, honey, I might have to take this whole thing apart and put it back together again. Oh, hi, Christie.”

I raised a palm.

“That’s… do you really have to do that?” Grizzy asked. “It’s fine, Arthur. There’s nothing wrong with the TV stand.”

“Spirit levels don’t lie, Griselda.”

“Save me,” my bestie hissed, under her breath.

I guided her into the kitchen, away from the grunting man and the occasional mutter about shoddy workmanship. Curly Fries wasn’t in the kitchen for once and a collection of tools sat on Grizzy’s table.

“He’s driving me crazy,” my best friend whispered. “I can’t get him to slow down for a second. I think he needs to distract himself. He’s worried about the case.” Griselda ran a hand over her forehead. “And that can’t be good, can it? It has to mean that there’s something wrong.”

I didn’t want to reply. Upsetting her wouldn’t change anything.

“Christie, you have to level with me here. How many times did I tag along on your investigations?”

“Plenty.”

“And you know that I can handle it. Remember when Missi and Vee were suspects? You helped them.”

“So you trust me to help you,” I replied.

“Yes. Are you consulting on the case? Did Liam ask for your help?”

“The opposite.” I exhaled, trying to calm myself. It still annoyed me that he’d acted the way he had. “He told me to stay away from the case because you’re involved.”

“Involved? I’m not involved!” Grizzy squeaked.

I patted her on the back. “I know that. And I’m sure, deep down, Liam knows that too. He’s just trying to do his job.” And being pigheaded.

“Ow!” Arthur cried from the living room. “I’m OK! Don’t worry about me.”

“I need a break from this,” Griselda said. “But Liam said not to leave town.”

“He said that?”

“He did.” Her shoulders sagged. “What are we going to do? What if I go to jail?”

“You won’t. You didn’t do it, so you won’t. They can’t convict an innocent person.”

“Oh come on, Chris, you and I both know that innocent people get convicted all the time.”

“I wouldn’t say ‘all the time.’”

“But it happens. I could be one of those people. What about Arthur? And poor Curly?” She burst into tears and covered her face with her hands.

Grizzy was never this emotional. This had to have seriously affected her. She cared about people and her Burger Bar, but she didn’t cry like this. Not that there was anything wrong with crying.

I hugged my bestie. ‘All right. Uh, it’s… it’s going to be OK.” Man, I was bad at this stuff. “Look, stop crying, all right? Let’s go out. We’ll go over to Missi and Vee’s. They always cheer you up. Besides, I have to pick up Aggy before she becomes Missi’s indentured servant.”
